Reading the Qur’an is an act of worship and a meeting with Allah’s guidance. These five practices help transform recitation from a mechanical routine into attentive worship.
1. Seek refuge with Allah
Before beginning, say:
Aʿūdhu billāhi min ash-shayṭānir-rajīm.
The Qur’an commands believers to seek Allah’s protection from Satan when beginning recitation.
فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ
2. Recite clearly and without rushing
Allah commands measured recitation. Give letters and words their proper pronunciation according to your ability, and avoid racing merely to finish a page or sūrah.
أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيلًا
3. Reflect upon the meaning
The Qur’an asks why people do not reflect upon its message and warns against hearts becoming closed to guidance.
أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ أَمْ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبٍ أَقْفَالُهَآ
Pause to understand the passage. Use a trusted translation and reputable tafsīr, particularly when a verse is difficult or could be misunderstood — both sit beside every āyah in the reader.
4. Listen attentively when it is recited
The Qur’an commands believers to listen and remain attentive when the Qur’an is being recited. This means avoiding unnecessary conversation and treating the recitation respectfully.
وَإِذَا قُرِئَ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ فَٱسْتَمِعُوا۟ لَهُۥ وَأَنصِتُوا۟ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
5. Read with the intention to respond
When you encounter:
- A command, consider how to follow it.
- A prohibition, consider what to leave.
- A promise, ask Allah for His reward.
- A warning, seek Allah’s protection.
- A story, identify its lesson.
The Qur’an was revealed as a blessed Book so that its verses would be reflected upon — not merely pronounced.
كِتَـٰبٌ أَنزَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَـٰرَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوٓا۟ ءَايَـٰتِهِۦ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْأَلْبَـٰبِ
Good etiquette is not limited to how the muṣḥaf is held. It includes attention, humility, reflection and a sincere intention to live according to Allah’s guidance. A steady routine helps — see how to build a daily Qur’an habit.
