The Shahādah, or testimony of faith, is the first pillar of Islam. It is the sentence by which a person enters Islam, and the foundation on which every other act of worship is built.

It is pronounced:

Ashhadu an lā ilāha illa Allāh, wa ashhadu anna Muḥammadan rasūl Allāh.

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ

Meaning: I testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ named this testimony as the first of the five pillars upon which Islam is built.

What does “Lā ilāha illa Allāh” mean?

لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ

This statement means far more than believing that Allah exists. It means recognising that Allah alone deserves every act of worship.

Prayer, supplication, reliance, sacrifice, hope and ultimate devotion are directed to Him alone. The Qur’an states that Allah, the angels and those possessed of knowledge all bear witness to this truth:

شَهِدَ ٱللَّهُ أَنَّهُۥ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ وَأُو۟لُوا۟ ٱلْعِلْمِ قَآئِمًۢا بِٱلْقِسْطِ ۚ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ ٱلْحَكِيمُ

The Qur’an also instructs the believer to know this with certainty:

فَٱعْلَمْ أَنَّهُۥ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنۢبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ وَمَثْوَىٰكُمْ

What does “Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah” mean?

The second half means believing that Muhammad ﷺ was sent by Allah with His final message. The Qur’an names him as Allah’s Messenger and the seal of the prophets:

مَّا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَآ أَحَدٍ مِّن رِّجَالِكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن رَّسُولَ ٱللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ ٱلنَّبِيِّـۧنَ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمًا

Believing in his message includes accepting his authentic teachings, following his example, and worshipping Allah according to the guidance he delivered — not according to what we find easiest or most familiar.

The Shahādah should shape your life

The testimony was never meant to be an empty phrase. It sets out a way of living:

  • Worship Allah alone.
  • Avoid associating any partner with Him.
  • Follow the Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah.
  • Seek Allah’s pleasure in the choices you make.
  • Return to Allah in repentance when you fall short.

The Shahādah is where a Muslim’s journey begins, but its meaning keeps unfolding for the rest of that life. A natural next step is to learn how to pray, since the testimony is renewed in every prayer you stand for.
