What the Qur’an Teaches About Anxiety, Sadness and Hardship
Where the Qur’an tells us to turn when worry and grief become heavy.

The Qur’an does not pretend that believers will never experience sadness, pressure or fear. Instead, it teaches us where to turn when those feelings become heavy.
Remembering Allah settles the heart
Sūrah al-Raʿd teaches that hearts find reassurance through the remembrance of Allah. This does not mean that every difficult emotion instantly disappears. It means that faith gives the heart an anchor, direction and relationship with its Creator.
Hardship is accompanied by ease
Sūrah al-Sharḥ repeats the promise that with hardship comes ease. The verse says ease is with hardship, reminding believers that Allah may provide strength, people, opportunities, reward or unexpected relief even before the trial has completely ended.
Allah knows your capacity
Al-Baqarah 2:286 teaches that Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. The same verse teaches believers to ask for pardon, forgiveness, mercy and protection from burdens they cannot bear.
The Prophet ﷺ made duʿā’ against worry and grief
The Prophet ﷺ regularly sought refuge with Allah from worry, grief, helplessness, laziness, cowardice, miserliness, overwhelming debt and being overpowered by others. This authentic supplication demonstrates that emotional and practical burdens should be acknowledged and brought before Allah.
Faith does not require a person to hide suffering. Alongside prayer and Qur’an, speak with trustworthy people and seek qualified support when sadness, anxiety or distress begins to interfere seriously with daily life. The seven Qur’anic duʿās are a good place to begin asking.
